Automobile Insurance: Why Am I Paying Extra Than My Neighbor? – WHHR

Auto insurance rates have fallen for most of the country this year – but not in Indianapolis.

INDIANAPOLIS – Auto insurance rates have fallen for most of the country this year, but Indianapolis has not.

How much do we pay

According to the auto insurance comparison site The Zebra, rates around Circle City have risen by two percent.

However, The Zebra 2021 report The State of Car Insurance found that Hoosier State as a whole is at the bottom of the list in terms of price. Indiana ranks 42nd among the 50 states plus Washington DC.

The average price? $ 1,188 a year.

How is my tariff determined?

What you pay is based on four things.

First, who you are. Your age, credit score, and even your gender can all play a role.

Nicole Beck, a spokeswoman for Zebra, said having an accident-prone area can add to your bottom line.

"If you have a really busy intersection or people keep getting into fender benders and making claims, that zip code is marked as more expensive," Beck said.

Drivers in these three Indy zip codes – 46218, 46208, and 46205 – pay the most, nearly $ 1,400 a year, according to the report.

Motorists who pay the least or less than $ 1,100 a year live in the small towns of Saratoga, Winchester, and Muncie.

Then there is what you are driving. The newer your car, the more you pay.

Finally, how you drive. Beck said that bad behavior means a lot of money.

"A hit-and-run, race, or DUI will add about $ 1,000 a year to your prices over the next three years. If you go too fast, it'll be about $ 353," Beck said.

How can i save money?

To save money, bundle the insurance cover with your home contents or tenant insurance. Also, buy your insurance coverage every six months and ask your employer about discounts for partnerships.

If you change insurers, you won't let your insurance cover expire a day. That can wipe out your newfound savings.

Some insurers give you a discount of up to ten percent for taking part in an online defensive driving course.

If you can do without a second vehicle for two or three months, you can reduce your insurance coverage to parking garage insurance. It is a partial cover for people who typically work seasonally or drive classic cars. The vehicle must remain parked.

When you're ready to drive again, give your insurer 48 hours to upgrade your coverage.
