Defend your cash: Rental car insurance – KZTV Motion 10 Information

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Many of you are undoubtedly planning vacations; Booking of plane tickets and reservation of a rental car.

In today's Protecting Your Money segment, a local insurance agent talks to us about the importance of car rental insurance as you never know when accidents will happen and what your responsibilities are.

We walk across the river and through the forest to our grandmother's house; and let's say we're driving a rental car. And wouldn't you know … BANG! You get into an accident while driving the rental car.

Have you insured the rental car?

Laura Harris, a local insurance broker, suggests that you should.

“Remember, you're usually in an unfamiliar vehicle in an unfamiliar location, so you want to make sure you have adequate coverage,” says Harris.

So what's the first thing to do if you have an accident while driving your rental car?
Remember that you signed a contract stating that you are responsible for everything that happens to this rental car.

"Before you call anyone, take pictures," advises Harris. "See if you can take photos of both vehicles, including license plates, because if you have identification problems it helps a lot."

It will also help get the other driver to give you a copy of their driver's license and insurance card because if the accident is their fault make sure you are using their insurance, not yours.

According to Harris, the minimum liability in Texas is:

  • $ 30,000 for injuries to anyone in the other vehicle
  • $ 60,000 total for all injuries
  • $ 25,000 in vehicle damage

"So if you drive a $ 30,000 car and hit another $ 30,000 car and you have a minimum liability limit, you can only have $ 25,000 to cover the damaged property," Harris says . "For the car you drive and the one you hit."

If you are not in Texas, Harris adds that your Texas liability limits may increase to the limits where the accident occurred.

And here's some advice from Harris on a common trap.

“You don't want to risk that when you rent a car you will not have the proper coverage at home and just assume that the coverage you have with your airline will take care of everything. "

Now the car rental company, which is already lacking vehicles due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has one less vehicle available. Guess what?

"If they rent the car for $ 60.00 a day, they want me to pay the $ 60.00 a day for the downtime because they can't rent the car," says Harris.

So remember, when you rent a vehicle, you are responsible for everything that happens to it, whether it's your fault or not. That means a chip in the windshield, hail damage, flood damage and more.
